Hand luggage: FACUA hopes Brussels won't bend to airlines' pressure to drop Consumer Affairs Ministry's fine

The airline lobby is pressing the European Commission to open an infringement case against Spain for sanctions that are based on the case law of the European Court of Justice itself.

FACUA-Consumers in Action hopes that the European Commission will not bend to the airlines in the face of its pressure to drop the fines imposed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs. These penalties amount to 179 million euros and are the result of complaints that the association has been raising since 2018 for the illegal surcharge for travelling with hand luggage that Ryanair introduced and that other airlines later imitated.

Brussels has requested information from the Spanish government on the sanctions imposed by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs on Ryanair, Vueling, EasyJet, Norwegian and Volotea for hand luggage surcharges and other irregularities. The aim of the airline lobby is that the request will lead to an infringement case.
